S Korea to reduce number of troops by 100,000 by 2022 – Reports
Seoul, Oct 11 (Sputnik) South Korea will reduce the number of troops in its reserves by 100,000 by 2022, media reported on Friday.
During a parliamentary audit, an army representative said that the reduction would be carried out during the ongoing reform of the national defence system, South Korea's KTV broadcaster reported. There are expected to be 365,000 total troops after the reduction.
The army will reportedly focus solely on military tasks.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula significantly improved last year after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump. In June 2018, Kim and Trump reached an agreement stipulating that North Korea would make efforts to promote the complete denuclearization of the peninsula in exchange for the freezing of US-South Korean military drills and potential removal of US sanctions.
However, the negotiation process stalled this year after Pyongyang resumed missile tests.
