Santoor maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharjee to regale audience in Los Angeles in November

Kolkata/Los Angeles, Oct 25 (IBNS): India's well-known santoor player Pandit Tarun  Bhattacharjee   is scheduled to perform at the Church of Scintology, Los Angeles, on November 2, 2018.

He will be accompanied by Girish Chatterjee on vocals and Debasish Chowdhury on the Tabla.

A disciple of renowned Indian musician and sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhattacharjee belongs to the Maihar gharana of Indian classical music and has been India's musical ambassador to the world.

He has played at the Royal Albert Hall, Palace-de-beaux (Belgium), Theater- De-La-Viile (France), Apollo Theatre (Spain), Jubilee Auditorium (Canada), and Kremlin (Russia).

Prince Charles, George Harrison, Paolo Solaris and other dignitaries figure among his audience list.

Pandit Bhattacharjee has not only brought about innovations in the instrument itself but also its style of play.

It was he who first showed that one could 'meend' or glide notes at the lower octave in a hammered instrument like santoor. He virtually changed the art of playing santoor forever.

Tarun Bhattacharjee is the inventor of "mankas" or fine tuners that help in speedy tuning of this 100 stringed instrument, with a long lasting effect and a very high degree of accuracy.

His innovative techniques of playing the santoor has also facilitated in the playing of "Krintans, Ekharatans, Boltans", thus broadening the utility of the santoor in various traditional art forms.

His improvisations on the shape and string arrangements have resulted in deeper and more classical sound for the santoor.

Maestro Tarun Bhattacharjee is recognized the world over for his wizardry in Ragdari, as well as, Layakari (mathematical calculations).

Bhattacharjee has released over 150 CDs and cassettes.

He has been the recipient of numerous felicitations like pre Grammy nomination in 1997, excellence in world music USA, and his CD "Kirwani" has been acclaimed as the top 10 in the world.

Pandit Bhattacharjee received his talim (music instructions) from his father Pt. Rabi Bhattacharya, Pt. Dulal Roy and finally from Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar.

He endorses the 'End Polio Now' campaign of Rotary International as its ambassador and has been recognized by the Indian National Polio Plus Committee both at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi and Calcutta Press Club (along with Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Ltd) for his role in promoting the cause.
