Washington, July 6 (IBNS):  Scott Pruitt has quit as US Environmental Protection Agency head, country's President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday.

Trump said he has accepted Pruitt's resignation.

Trump said Scott had performed an 'outstanding job' as the chief of the agency.

"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this. The Senate confirmed Deputy at EPA, Andrew Wheeler, will," Trump tweeted.

Trump said Scott's deputy Andrew Wheeler will currently take over as the acting head of the agency.

On Wheeler's appointment, Trump said,  "On Monday assume duties as the acting Administrator of the EPA. I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda. We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!

As per a BBC report,  since taking office Pruitt has been mired in series of scandals concerning his spending habits and alleged misuse of office.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, he blamed "unrelenting attacks" on himself and his family, reported BBC.
