Southeast Asian leaders at General Assembly, call for a strengthened more democratic UN
“The implementation of the 2030 Agenda must be supported by the realization of strong global partnership, a global partnership that makes a transformative difference to the efforts of advancing sustainable development,” Indonesian Vice-President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla said of the 17 SDGs that aim to end poverty, hunger and a host of other social ills over the next 14 years.
“The Global community must also provide sufficient means for the implementation of the sustainable development goals. Such means include stable and predictable funding mechanisms and innovative approaches in financing for development,” he told the Assembly’s annual General Debate.
“No one country or region alone can resolve these challenges. It requires global partnership and global solidarity, it needs a global solution,” he said.
Turning to UN reform, Kalla called for expanding the 15-member Security Council to make it more representative, democratic and up-to-date, for revitalizing the General Assembly to make it more effective in ensuring system-wide coherence, and for granting the Secretary General and Secretariat independence to uphold the purpose and principles of the UN Charter.”
“Too many important players have been left out in the decision making process from the UN, where the principles of democracy are often put aside. Too often the decisions taken at the UN differ to that which is needed on the ground,” he declared.
“More than ever before we need the United Nations, a United Nations that is at the centre of our global governance, a United Nations that is transparent, effective, accountable, efficient and representative. Key to this is the UN reform, to make the United Nations stronger, making it more relevant to the 21st century challenges and reality.”
Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith also called for further strengthening the UN to address important global issues, especially in the field of development.
“All Member States of the United Nations should extend full support and cooperation and fulfil their international obligations in order to address these enormous global challenges, and in particular to implement the SDGs in a timely and effective manner,” he said.
