Chiang Rai, July 6 (IBNS): A retired Thai navy driver has perished due to lack of oxygen while helping the football them who are trapped inside a cave in the country's Chiang Rai province.

Petty Officer Saman Gunan lost consciousness while coming back from the cave where he was delivering air tanks to the trapped team.

Informing reports about his death, the deputy governor of the province said, "His job was to deliver oxygen. He did not have enough on his way back."

Thai Seal commander Rear Adm Arpakorn Yookongkaew said, "On the way back from setting up oxygen bottles, Petty Officer First Class Saman Gunan passed out. His buddy tried to give him first aid, but he did not respond. We brought him to chamber three and gave him another round of first aid, but he remained unconscious."

Meanwhile, the oxygen level where the team is trapped has come down to 15 percent. The usual rate is around 21 percent.

The news about the trapped team of 12 footballers and their coach first emerged last month.

The team had ventured inside the attraction while it was dry, but a heavy rainfall later inundated the area, making it difficult for the team to return back.

Following days of anxious waiting and searching, the team was found alive by British divers, more than a week later.

According to reports, it will take around a month for them to be rescued.
