Milan: A tourist boat capsized in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, leaving four people dead on Sunday.

According to reports, 20 passengers, including tourists, were injured in the incident.

The boat capsized between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona.

Search and rescue operations have now concluded after the last body was recovered at 8 a.m. local time (2 a.m. ET), the fire service, Vigili del Fuoco, said in a tweet Monday as quoted by CNN.

The 16-meter (52-foot) boat had been carrying 24 people when it encountered difficulty during a “violent storm” and capsized shortly after 7:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. ET) on Sunday, CNN affiliate Sky Tg24 reported.

As many as 22 passengers were present in the boat when the mishap occurred.

Scientists told ANSA that extreme weather events like heat waves, supercharged storms, flooding and droughts are becoming more frequent and more intense because of climate change caused by human greenhouse-gas emissions.
