Tokyo, Oct 23 (IBNS): A powerful typhoon that made a landfall on Japan’s central Pacific coast earlier on Monday, left five dead and many injured in its wake, as it battered a wide area with heavy rain and strong winds, media reported.

Capital Tokyo also was battered by the Typhoon Lan and daily life disrupted, including plane and commuter train services.

The typhoon, which hit Shizuoka Prefecture around 3 a.m., sparked floods and mudslides as it traveled along Honshu, reported Japan Times.

The centre of the storm was northeast of Tokyo on Monday morning and it was moving northeast at 65 km/h (40 mph), the media quoted the Japan Meteorological Agency as saying.

The Met Office expected it to move out into the Pacific later on Monday and become a tropical depression on Tuesday, media reported.
