Quebec (Canada): The bodies of eight migrants, including two minors, have been retrieved after they perished while attempting to unlawfully cross from Canada into the United States, BBC reported citing the authorities

Two more bodies were also sighted in the St. Lawrence River by a police helicopter Friday.

Among the deceased were individuals from Romania and India.

The authorities were already searching for Casey Oakes, a 30-year-old boater who is still missing.

It is uncertain whether there is any connection between Oakes and the families who perished.

At approximately 5:00 pm local time (9:00 pm GMT), law enforcement discovered the first cadaver in a wetland situated in Tsi Snaihne, a Mohawk land positioned directly on the border between the United States and Canada.

The deceased were found within the Quebec vicinity of Akwesasne, a Mohawk enclave that encompasses portions of Ontario, Quebec, and New York State. The location is approximately 120km to the west of Montreal.

The police found the remaining corpses close by, but the authorities have not yet made their identities public.

The deceased consisted of two minors and six adults.

During a news briefing on Friday, a local police chief stated that one of the minors, who was under three years old, possessed a Canadian passport. The other infant was also a citizen of Canada.

Law enforcement officials believe that the group comprised two families, one of Romanian and the other of Indian descent, as reported by Lee-Ann O'Brien, the Deputy Chief of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service.

According to O'Brien, it is believed that all the deceased individuals were trying to cross into the US from Canada illicitly. She also mentioned that the weather was turbulent in the region on Wednesday night.

Condoling the deaths, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, "This is a heartbreaking situation."
