Washington/UNI: Main goal of the United States in the Afghan peace talks is to bring democracy and stability to the country and ensure strategic and long-term relations between the two countries, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a video conference meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

During the meeting held on Monday Pompeo and Ghani discussed in detail the peace process in Afghanistan, including prisoners release process and other measures.

Sputnik reported that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani stressed the importance of a ceasefire in the country and outlined a roadmap for achieving stability in the country, he felt that teams from the both sides should step up joint efforts to implement the set goals.

Pompeo stressed the need for cooperation in the field of information between Washington and Kabul and both the leaders agreed to work on further details in the coming days, the statement said.

The United States and the Taliban had signed a peace agreement on February 29, this year following months of talks. Main points of the the peace agreement are the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and the launch of intra-Afghan peace talks, and mutual exchange of prisoners.

The peace process, however, has been sluggish mainly due to an internal power crisis in Kabul and disruptions during the prisoners' swap.
