Windstorm rips through southern Quebec causing power outages

Montreal/IBNS: More than 100,000 Hydro-Québec customers across southern Quebec have been without electricity due to power outages caused by strong and gusting winds, media reports said.

The hardest-hit region was the greater Montreal area with wind gusts of over 70 km/h that have left 60,000 Hydro clients without functioning air conditioners or fans.

Close to 15,000 clients in the Montérégie region and more than 11,000 clients in the Laurentians have been without electricity.

Although the work of the linemen is in progress to restore the service, increasing winds are making their task more difficult. Other parts of the province are also expected to see more outages.

Hydro Quebec said in a media release: "The strong winds blowing are causing many power outages. The regions most affected are the greater Montréal, Laurentides and Montérégie areas. The storm is still evolving and moving eastward across the province.

"Linemen are already working to restore the service. However increasing winds make their task more difficult."

It urged the people to stay informed by using the Power Outages map or the mobile application.

"Note, however, that recovery times for some areas may not be available due to the high number of outages," it said.
