Nirbhaya case death row convict Vinay moves EC

New Delhi/UNI: Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case death row convict Vinay Sharma on Thursday registered a plea before the Election Commission challenging the rejection of his mercy petition.

AP Singh, Vinay's lawyer, stated that the mercy plea was rejected when the Model Code of Conduct was in effect in Delhi for the Feb 8 Assembly polls.

"The petition was sent on January 29, when the Model Code of Conduct was in force," TV channels reported counsel as saying.

Vinay used the same rationale in court as well where he had complained that proper procedures were not followed as model code of conduct was in place.

However, the court had not accepted these arguments.

Earlier this week, Vinay banged his head against the wall in his cell in Tihar jail. Wardens intervened and stopped him.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana has issued death warrants for March 3 against convicts Vinay Sharma, Akshay Kumar Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh in the 2012 gang rape-murder case.
