Amid rising COVID-19 cases, Indian govt extends lockdown till May 31

New Delhi/IBNS: As the number of COVID-19 cases in India continues to rise, the Centre on Sunday extended the nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of the virus till May 31.

This third extension of the lockdown is scheduled to end on May 17 (today).

In its fresh guidelines issued by the Home Ministry, all domestic and international air travel will remain suspended except for medical purposes.

Shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, metro services will remain shut too.

Schools, colleges, and other educational institutes will remain closed as well during this period.

Sporting activities will be allowed without spectators, the government said. 

The Ministry said inter-state movement of passenger vehicles, buses to be allowed with mutual consent of states involved during COVID-19 lockdown.

The government said all social, political, religious functions, and places of worship will remain shut till May 31.

The lockdown was first imposed in the country on Mar 25.

India witnesses massive spike in COVID-19 cases:

India has crossed the 90,000-mark in terms of the total number of coronavirus cases across the country with the biggest single-day jump of 4,987 new infections on Saturday.

The total number of cases stands at 90,927 so far, including 2,872 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Of the total deaths reported, 120 were registered in the last 24 hours.

More than 34,000 patients have been cured so far with the recovery rate standing at 37.51 per cent as of Sunday morning.
