Guwahati/UNI: The ruling BJP-led alliance in Assam is set to create history in the state by becoming the only non-Congress government to win consecutive terms.

BJP led NDA is leading in 77 assembly seats, while the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress is ahead in 48 seats.

At 6 pm, the BJP is leading in 62 seats and its partners- Asom Gana Parishad is ahead 10 and United People’s Party, Liberal in seven constituencies.

Congress candidates are leading in 26 seats, while those of its ally AIUDF in 11 and Bodoland People’s Front in three.
The majority mark in Assam is 64.

Counting of votes for the Assam assembly elections began at 8 am today amid strict health protocols.

A three-tier security apparatus has also been arranged at the 331 counting halls across the state that voted in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6.

With the BJP looking to retain power in Assam once again, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Sarbanand Sonowal and party president J P Nadda on BJP’s 'impressive victory' in the state.

In a tweet, Singh said the pro-people policies of the Modi-led government and the state government under Sonowal have once again helped the BJP in winning the assembly elections in Assam.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AGP chief and minister Atul Bora have taken a comfortable lead from Majuli, Jalukbari and Bokakhat.

Congress president and MP Ripun Bora and leader of the opposition in the assembly Debabrata Saikia are trailing in Gohpur and Nazira.

Elated over the initial trends of Assam poll results, which showed that the BJP has an edge over its rivals, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday exuded confidence that the saffron party-led alliance will retain power in the state.

The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, trends available on the Election Commission website at 12.15 pm showed.

"People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL," Mr Sonowal told reporters.

"The trends are completely in favour of the BJP. The party will achieve its target," he said.
