The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has taken an early lead as counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections is underway on Monday.

According to initial trends, the NDA is ahead in 48 seats, while the Congress is leading in 14 constituencies. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has registered a lead in one seat so far.

Vote counting is being conducted across 40 centres spread over 35 districts in the state.

Assam recorded a high voter turnout of 85.96 per cent during the single-phase polling held on April 9, in which nearly 2.50 crore voters cast their ballots to decide the fate of 722 candidates, contesting for the 126 seats in the Assembly.

Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened, with 25 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed to secure counting centres and strongrooms across the state.
