India on Tuesday dispatched food and relief assistance to flood-hit Mozambique, expressing solidarity with the African nation as it grapples with the impact of devastating floods.

In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India stands firmly with the people of Mozambique following severe flooding in its central and southern provinces.

“India stands in solidarity with Mozambique in the wake of the devastating floods impacting its central and southern provinces,” Jaiswal wrote.

He said India has sent 500 metric tonnes of rice as immediate food assistance, along with 10 metric tonnes of essential relief supplies and other support materials to aid affected communities.

“As part of its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts, India has mounted a multi-faceted response to support the people of Mozambique. This includes dispatch of 500 MT of rice as immediate food assistance, 10 MT of essential relief supplies such as tents, hygiene kits and rehabilitation support items, and 3 tonnes of critical medicines aboard an Indian Navy ship,” Jaiswal said in the post.

He added that 86 metric tonnes of life-saving medicines have already been delivered via the sea route as part of the relief mission.

“India remains committed to extending multifaceted support — humanitarian, medical and logistical — reaffirming its role as a trusted first responder and a steadfast partner in the Indian Ocean Region and Africa,” he added.

According to the official website of the Indian Embassy in Mozambique, India shares warm, friendly and substantive ties with the African nation.

The embassy notes that trade links between Mozambique and the western states of India date back several centuries and predate the colonial era. These historic people-to-people connections have evolved into a strong modern partnership, marked by regular political engagement, growing economic cooperation and a well-integrated Indian community living in Mozambique.
