Indian Railways complete first trial run of electric loco in Assam

Guwahati/IBNS : The Indian Railways conducted the trial run of electric locomotive for the first time in Assam in order to provide electric rail connectivity to the remote areas of the northeast.

The trial was conducted between between Bongaigaon-Sorupeta on February 18.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal shared a video on Twitter in which  a WAG9 electric locomotive can be seen running on the tracks for the very first time in Assam.

The trial run was conducted by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited(RVNL).

" RVNL completed an electric loco trial between Bongaigaon-Sorupeta on 18.02.2021. This is the first electric traction in operation in Assam changing the dynamics of train operations in NE region with green energy, efficient and environment-friendly options," RVNL tweeted.

Till November 2020, 66 per cent of the broad gauge network has been electrified. The Indian Railways aims to complete the electrification by 2023.

The Railways have set a target of being a net-zero emitter of carbon by 2030 and generate renewable energy using Railway’s assets.
