India's Coronavirus cases breach 90,000-mark, death toll jumps to 2,872

New Delhi/IBNS: India has crossed the 90,000-mark in terms of the total number of coronavirus cases across the country with the biggest single-day jump of 4,987 new infections on Saturday.

The total number of cases stands at 90,927 so far, including 2,872 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Of the total deaths reported, 120 were registered in the last 24 hours.

More than 34,000 patients have been cured so far with the recovery rate standing at 37.51 per cent as of Sunday morning.

With the addition of 1606 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, Maharashtra crossed the 30,000-mark.

The western state remains the worst hit-state in the country with 67 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra's capital city-Mumbai-also witnessed the worst increase in the number of cases with a jump of 884 new infections. The country's financial capital presently has 18,555 cases alone.

Mumbai reported 41 deaths on Saturday taking the total fatality toll in the city to 696.

The southern state of Tamil Nadu has breached the 10000-mark with 400 new cases in a single day.

Delhi has crossed the 9,000-mark as the city reported 438 new cases on Saturday. So far 129 people have died in the national capital.

In Gujarat, the state with the second-highest number of coronavirus cases, 340 new COVID-19 patients were reported on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the three-phase lockdown imposed by the Centre on Mar 25 first to stem the spread of the contagion is scheduled to end on Sunday.

The government is expected to ease restrictions with a focus on the projection of "normalcy on ground."

The Union Health Ministry has already published a list of dos and don'ts for the urban local bodies to follow in order to contain the coronavirus spread in "informal settlements" in the cities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a Rs 20 lakh crore economic package to revive the economy in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Globally, over 40 lakh people have been affected by the highly contagious virus.

The United States is the worst-hit in terms of the number of fatalities. It has now confirmed a total of 1,467,884 cases including 88, 774 deaths.
