Kolkata/IBNS: Five women teachers agitating against alleged punishment transfer by the state government attempted suicide by consuming poison in presence of police personnel outside state school education headquarter, Bikash Bhavan, in Kolkata's Salt Lake on Tuesday evening, reports said.

According to reports, these five teachers are the members of Shikshak Aikya Mukta Mancha which has been demonstrating for a long time demanding hike in the payments of the Sishu Shiksha Kendra (SSK) and Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra (MSK) teachers.

These five contractual SSK teachers, who are the residents of Kolkata's neighbouring South 24 Parganas district, claimed that they had been transferred to North Bengal after staging protests demanding an increase in their salaries.

A small group of SSKs tried to demonstrate in front of Bikash Bhavan on Tuesday and after being obstructed by the police, five of them consumed some liquid from a small bottle (which were containing poison as the protesters claimed) in the presence of the media.

They were rushed to Bidhannagar Sub Divisional Hospital and later two of them were shifted to NRS Medical College and Hospital, and remaining three were referred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The five women are currently undergoing treatments in the two state-run hospitals in serious conditions, officials said.

Shikshak Aikya Mukta Mancha, a forum of the SSK and MSK teachers, had earlier staged demonstrations over the issue at multiple locations, including Esplanade, Nabanna, Bikash Bhavan and in front of the residence of state Education Minister Bratya Basu.
