Navjot Sidhu to be appointed Punjab Congress chief: Report

| @indiablooms | Jul 15, 2021, at 08:21 pm

Chandigarh/IBNS: Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to be appointed the next Congress chief of Punjab as the party tries to reach a formula to end the fierce infighting ahead of the 2021 Punjab assembly polls, said media reports.

Sidhu and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh have been locked in a bitter feud that threatened to derail Congress's poll campaign for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections.

Sidhu will replace Sunil Jakkar and two other leaders, most likely a Dalit, and another from general category, will be promoted, according to an NDTV report.

The report said Amarinder Singh is also making changes in his Council of Ministers and Charanjeet Channi and Gurpreet Kangar are some of the leaders who are likely to be sacked.

A committee was set up by Sonia Gandhi last month to resolve the squabble which had been the highlight of the infighting within Punjab Congress.

The news of the compromise between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Amrinder Singh comes after the Chief Minister met Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi a week ago.

Days before the meeting Sidhu had met Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Navjot Sidhu and Amrinder Singh have been maintaining a running feud since the 2017 polls. Sidhu had hoped to be the deputy chief minister but his hopes were dashed with Amrinder Singh's opposition.

Sidhu was the star campaigner of Congress in 2017 assembly polls. Instead of Deputy Chief Minister, he was made a minister in the Amrinder Singh government. However, two years later he vacated the post after his ministry was downgraded
