New Delhi/UNI: President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended their greetings to the people on the occasion of Onam.

"Onam greetings to all our fellow citizens! This festival is a celebration of the new harvest. It highlights the tireless work of farmers. It is an occasion to express gratitude to mother nature. I wish progress and prosperity for all fellow citizens," the President wrote on Twitter.

Naidu in his greetings said Onam marks the beginning of harvest season in various parts of our country.

"My warm greetings on the auspicious occasion of Onam today...Onam also honours the memory of great King Mahabali of Kerala, who is celebrated for his nobility & generosity," he posted.

The Prime Minister, in a message in Malayalam language, prayed for everyone's good health and wellbeing.

"Best wishes on the special occasion of Onam, a festival associated with positivity, vibrancy, brotherhood and harmony," Modi said in a tweet.

Onam, which falls in the month of Chingam -- the first month according to the Malayalam Calendar, is an annual harvest festival celebrated in Kerala.

On this day, the people, clad in new clothes, decorate their houses with flower carpets and arrange an Onam feast (Ona Sadya) to mark the occasion.
