Supreme Court grants Pawan Khera anticipatory bail in case over allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife

New Delhi/IBNS: In a relief for Pawan Khera, the Supreme Court of India on Friday granted anticipatory bail to the Congress leader in a case over his allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, media reports said.

Court sets conditions for bail

The top court directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation, appear when summoned, and refrain from influencing or tampering with evidence, according to NDTV.

He has also been barred from leaving the country without prior court permission.

‘Not necessary to humiliate me’: Khera

Khera on Thursday told the apex court that it was “not necessary to humiliate me with arrest,” arguing that rejection of his anticipatory bail plea would defeat the very purpose of pre-arrest protection.

Singhvi’s sharp remarks in court

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Khera, launched a strong attack on Sarma, calling him a “Constitutional cowboy or a Constitutional Rambo”.

He added that such conduct would make B. R. Ambedkar “turn in his grave”.

Case linked to remarks on CM’s wife

The case stems from an April 4 press conference where Khera made allegations against Sarma and his wife.

He had claimed that she held multiple passports and owned undisclosed foreign properties.

‘AI-generated fabrications’, says Sarma family

The Sarma family has denied the allegations, terming the documents “AI-generated fabrications”.

A complaint was subsequently filed with Guwahati Police, triggering the ongoing legal battle.
