Trinamool turncoats including Rajib Banerjee join BJP in presence of Amit Shah

New Delhi/IBNS: Five Trinamool Congress turncoats including former West Bengal Forest Minister Rajib Banerjee, actor Rudranil Ghosh on Saturday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah here.

Banerjee had resigned as the Trinamool MLA and party member just a day ago.

Apart from Banerjee, suspended rebel Trinamool MLA, Baishali Dalmia, sitting lawmaker Prabir Ghoshal, ex-party MLA Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, former Howrah Mayor Rathin Chakraborty have also joined the saffron camp.

Joining the BJP, Banerjee said, "We think development in a state cannot occur without the Centre's help. We had a meeting with the Home Minister over how we can develop West Bengal. We had a fruitful meeting. I told him that the law and order situation will have to improve."

He added, "We have demanded a special package and opportunities of employment for West Bengal. Amit Shah has agreed to it."

The five politicians and Ghosh flew down to the national capital after Union Home Minister and BJP strongman Amit Shah's scheduled two-day visit to West Bengal was cancelled at the last minute on Friday.

BJP leader and a former Trinamool man, Mukul Roy, along with his colleague Kailash Vijayvargiya were also present along with the turncoats.

Not giving much importance to the joining, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh told a regional channel, "It will not hamper the Trinamool at all. I just request all the turncoats to contest elections from their present constituencies only in the elections and don't switch to other seats."

"Why are they leaving the party just ahead of the polls?" Ghosh questioned.

Shah, who was about to be in West Bengal for a two-day visit starting from Saturday, had to cancel his trip at the last minute.

In Shah's physical absence, Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani will hold a rally in West Bengal's Howrah.

The Home Minister will join the rally virtually.
