Shamli (UP)/UNI: Three children died after being poisoned allegedly by their mother in Kairana area of Shamli district here in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police sources said here.

Police sources said that Mursaleen, a resident of Panjeeth village, works as a carpenter in Delhi and his wife Salma lived alone with her three children.

"It is being alleged that Salma gave poison to her son Saad (6), daughters Nisba (4) and one and a half-year-old Mantasha after which their condition deteriorated," they said.

Police sources said that while Saad died on the spot, Nisba succumbed while being taken to Meerut for treatment. "Mantasha died during treatment at the medical college in Meerut. Naushad, the uncle of the children, informed the police, who recovered some poisonous substance in a jug and a cloth on the spot," they said.

Police sources said that Mursaleen, who reached the village after getting the news, has given a complaint at Kotwali police station alleging that Salma poisoned the children. "The woman has been detained and is being quizzed," they said.

In-charge of the Kotwali police station while confirming the death of three children said that the reason behind Salma administering poison to her children is not clear.
