Anurag Kashyap turns 43
Born as Anurag Singh Kashyap on September 10, 1972 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, he is hailed as a modern day auteur and is largely responsible for influencing a new breed of Indian directors with experimental works.
Kashyap’s first movie Paanch (five), however,remains shelved due to censorship issues but he went on to direct a string of both critically and commercially successful movies.
Anurag shot into limelight with the controversial 2007 release Black Friday, dealing with the 1993 Mumbai bombings but found his ground with the new-age film Dev-D.
What followed was a cinematic movement in Bollywood, movies with expletives-laden dialogues and gory imagery, movies that seldom shied away from the reality.
His most famous venture was the Gangs of Wasseypur series, GoW 1 and GoW 2, a crime-drama based on a time period of 1970-2000, in Bihar.
Kashyap identifies himself as an atheist. He said, "I am an atheist. Cinema is the only religion I believe in."
Kashyap was awarded the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government at 2013 Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2013.
He is also the recipient of numerous film awards.
