At least 11 killed in Japan's welfare home fire incident

Tokyo, Feb 1 (IBNS): At least 11 people  died in a fire which broke out on Thursday in Japan's Hokkaido, reports said.

According to local broadcaster NHK, fire fighters were able to save five of the 16 residents who lived at the affected building.

The three-storey building in Sapporo city mostly housed elderly people.

The building is run by an organisation, who provides affordable housing to elderly people.

Following the incident, local authorities have launched an investigation.
