Mexico City/UNI/Xinhua: At least 11 people were shot dead Monday night by an armed group in Celaya in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities said Tuesday.

The Celaya secretariat of citizen security explained to Xinhua that the armed civilian commando shot up and set fire to two bars and a hotel in the town, leaving seven women and three men dead, while another person died on Tuesday in hospital.

Guanajuato's secretary of government Libia Garcia told the media that local authorities established a security board to review the situation and "attend to the families of the victims," in addition to requesting that the Guanajuato Prosecutor's Office investigate the incident.

According to local press, residents alerted authorities when they heard gun shots at about 10:00 p.m. Monday local time.

Various security and civil protection forces arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area, while a criminal group claimed responsibility for the attack.
