Gunman opens fire in Morocco's south, injuring over 10 people - Source

Nouakchott (Mauritania), Mar 12 (Sputnik/UNI) A man has opened fire in Morocco's southern city of Guelmim, causing injuries to over 10 people, a source in the Moroccan law enforcement agencies told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"A gunman has opened fire at several people in the city of Guelmim, southern Morocco. [At least] 11 people have been injured, some of them are in critical condition, including a police captain," the source said.

Such incidents are uncommon for Morocco's southern provinces, where security forces have been keeping enhanced security measures in light of the conflict with the Polisario Front movement.

For decades, Morocco has been involved in a conflict with the Polisario Front movement over control of Western Sahara. Polisario Front declared in 1976 it had established Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. This partially recognized state claims Western Sahara, but controls only a small part of it.

The United Nations does not recognize the republic and demands that a referendum on self-determination be held. Morocco pushes a plan for the region’s autonomy, while Polisario insists that the status of the territory should be determined by a referendum among the local population.
