Berlin, May 24 (Sputnik/UNI) German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US State Secretary Mike Pompeo will meet in the German capital of Berlin on May 31 to discuss both bilateral relations and pressing international matters, deputy spokeswoman of the German government, Martina Fietz, said on Friday.

"The chancellor will receive in her agency US State Secretary Mike Pompeo for talks. As you know, this will be compensation for the recently canceled visit [of Pompeo to Germany]. Apart from bilateral relations, talks will focus on pressing international matters," Fietz said at a briefing.

She added that Pompeo would also hold a meeting with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Berlin.

If the situation around Iran emerges as a topic for conversation during the talks between Merkel and Pompeo, the German chancellor will reaffirm that Germany favors only peaceful settlement, Fietz added.
