New Zealand: Days after Mosques shooting, Parliament opens with Quran recitation

Wellington, Mar 20 (IBNS): Days after the Mosques shooting in New Zealand's Christchurch, the parliament opened with the recitation of Islamic religious text Quran on Tuesday, media reports said.

In a gesture of solidarity with the victims of the shooting, which claimed 49 lives, an Imam led the prayer in the parliament.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern started her address in the parliament by uttering 'As-Salaam-Alaikum (Peace be with upon you)'.

The attack took place at two mosques in Christchurch city of New Zealand.

Over 40 people were treated for injuries.

The main suspect has been identified as an Australian citizen, He has been charged and remanded in custody to appear in the High Court on Apr 5.

Three others have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
