New Zealand traces source of COVID-19 outbreak that forced snap lockdown

Auckland/IBNS: New Zealand has traced the source of the recent lone COVID-19 case that forced the country to plunge into a snap lockdown.

After six months of zero coronavirus case, New Zealand reported its first infection as an Auckland man tested positive for the deadly virus.

As health officials have been trying to determine the source of the lone infection, tests showed the patient had a version of Delta strain which was found in Australia.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who received praise over her handling of the pandemic since 2020, said investigations narrowed down to the person who had arrived from Sydney on Aug 7.

"We believe we have uncovered the piece of the puzzle we were looking for," Ardern said.

The Prime Minister said tracing the source would make it easier "to circle the virus, lock it down and stamp it out."

However, she said the number of infections grew by 11 to 21 overnight.
