Islamabad/IBNS: At least 20 people, mostly Sikh pilgrims, were killed in a collision between a train and a bus near Sheikhupura on Friday afternoon, officials said, reported media.

At least eight people have been injured in the accident which occurred at around 1:30 pm, according to Dawn

The ill-fated bus was hit by the Karachi bound Shah Hussain Express in an unmanned railway crossing.

Rescue 1122 officials rushed to the spot for rescue operations, all of whom are being shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Sheikhupura, said the Dawn report.

Sheikhupura DPO Salahuddin said there were 25-26 people on the bus at the time of the accident, out which 20 have been killed.

The Sikh Yatrees were travelling to Peshawar from Nankana Sahib — where they had gone to visit relatives, the Dawn report said.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan has regretted the accident.

According to the Dawn report, there have been frequent accidents over the span of the last two years. Four months ago, a bus crossing an unmanned railway crossing near Rohri in Sindh was crushed by the Lahore-bound Pakistan Express train coming from Karachi, killing at least 19 people and leaving more than 30 injured.

Indian PM Narendra Modi mourned the loss of lives in the tragedy and tweeted: "Pained by the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan. My thoughts are with their families and friends in this hour of grief.I pray that those pilgrims injured recover at the earliest."
