New Delhi/Dahej, Jun 5 (IBNS): India, said to be the world's fourth-largest buyer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), received its first consignment of LNG of an estimated $25 billion contract from Russia, according to media reports on Tuesday.

LNG carrier 'LNG Kano', carrying a cargo from Russian supplier Gazprom, docked at Petronet LNG's import facility in Gujarat's Dahej on Monday, where it was received by Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, according to reports.

On Monday, a tweet from Gujarat Chief Minister's Office said, "Union Minister @dpradhanbjp today received "LNG Kano", the first-ever LNG cargo under the long-term contract between @gailindia & @GazpromEN of Russia at Dahej and termed it as 'golden day' in the India’s energy pursuit & a step towards transforming India into a gas-based economy."

Union minister Pradhan termed it as a 'golden day' and said, ""First we renegotiate price of LNG from Qatar, then reworked Australian supplies and now gas from Russia under renegotiated terms have started to flow."

GAIL has renegotiated both price volume with Russian supplier Gazprom -- a 20-year deal to import 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year.

Supplies from Russia come within weeks of India importing its first ever LNG cargo from the US under a long-term import deal, according to NDTV.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also tweeted on Tuesday, "Met Mr. Takeshi Hashimoto Director General, Mitusi OSK Lines Japan. They are stakeholders in several LNG projects in India including seafaring operations, LNG ships & investments in LNG projects. Welcomed them to further their presence in India."
