As a popular law entrance exam in India, AILET(All India Law Entrance Test) sees applications from thousands of aspiring candidates every year in the country. The exam is conducted once a year in 21 cities across India.
What is AILET?
AILET is a national level examination conducted by NLU Delhi (National Law University) for admission into LLB, LLM and PhD programs. It is a highly competitive exam with a very limited number of seats. Total seats tendered through AILET are 83 for LLB Program and 50 for LLM.
Mode of examination is offline and it is a speed & accuracy based test because you get less than a minute to solve strenuous questions, which makes the exam a race against time.Clearing AILET will ensure admission into NLU Delhi.
CLAT v/s AILET
As a law aspirant, you must have pondered about the difference between CLAT and AILET.Both are conducted for admission into NLUs, but while on one hand, CLAT is conducted for admission into 17 NLUs besides NLU Delhi, on the other, clearing AILET ensures admission into NLU D (Delhi) only. Both the exams have same syllabus butdrastically vary in terms of mode of conduction, exam pattern and difficulty level.
In terms of difficulty level, undoubtedly AILET is harder to clear because number of students who register is immense when compared to the number of seats offered. For that reason, AILET is a tough nut to crack.
What is the minimum eligibility to appear for AILET?
The minimum eligibilitydiffers as per the course you choose to apply for, i.e. specialization-dependent.
Eligibility for LLB Program
In order to appear for AILET,you must have completed your higher education (10+2) from a recognized schoolwith more than 50%.
Eligibility for LLM Program
If you have completed graduation in LLB with at least 55% from a reputed university, only then you are eligible to apply. Also, if you belong to SC/ST/PWD categories, you will get 5% relaxation in your percentage.
Eligibility for PhD Program
To appear for AILET PhD exam, you should have a Master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university with at least 55%; or
If you have at least 3 years’ experience as a State High Court judge or judge at Supreme court of India.
Process of Application for AILET
The next after meeting the eligibility criteria is to complete AILET Registration. AILET Application forms are only available in online mode and can be filled in the month of January. Simply follow the steps below to complete registration after visiting the official site of NLU Delhi
• Go to the link “AILET Application Form”
• Fill in all the information i.e. persona, educational and work experience.
• Attach the scanned copies of your photograph and signature.
• Review all the information provided by you.
• If the information provided is correct, then proceed towards fee payment.
• Fee can be paid in online (Credit card, debit card and net banking) and offline (at the post office) modes.
• Fee is different for different classes i.e. INR 3000 for General and OBSs, INR 1000 in case of SC/ST & PWDs, and below poverty line students are exempted from paying any application fee.
What is the Exam Pattern for AILET?
AILET is a pen- paper based test which makes it a blessing in disguise as you will get prior knowledge of difficulty level in advance just by looking at all the questions. This law entrance exam is of one and a half hour (90 minutes) duration. But, there is no negative marking which serves as a cherry on the cake, as you can solve as many questions as you can, whether you read them or not. Your scores might vary by a mark, but that one mark might push you above the cut- off.
Except the time limit and no negative marking scheme, exam pattern and syllabus is different for different specializations i.e. LLB and LLM.
AILET Exam Pattern for LLB Program
AILET exam for BA LLB comprises 150 questions which aspirants need to complete in duration of 90 minutes. The exam pattern is such, that the paper is divided into five sections- English Comprehension (35 questions), Basic Mathematics (10), General Knowledge/Awareness (35), Legal Aptitude (35) and Logical Reasoning (35).
Cut off generally depends on the difficulty level and number of students appearing. According to last year trends, cut offs are very high i.e. you must score around/ more than 100 marks to get admission into NLU Delhi.
AILET Exam Pattern for LLM Program
There is a total of 101 questions in exam which includes 100 objective type questions and 1 subjective question. Total marks are 150 i.e. 1 mark is awarded for each MCQ and 50 marks for subjective question, but the duration is just 90 minutes.
MCQ questions are asked from Law of contracts, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Constitutional law and Legal Theory. Also, the subjective question is based on any of the mentioned topics. Difficulty level of the paper is very high and cut offs required are around 90.
AILET Exam Pattern for PhD Program
AILET PhD comprises 2 papers and both of them carries 100 marks. In Paper 1, number of questions are 100 in the form of MCQs and are based on Research Mythology while in paper 2, you have to submit a Research proposal.
What is the Selection Procedure after AILET?
Post declaration of AILET results, NLU Delhi will conduct offline counselling for all the programs. Shortlisted students will receive an e- mail regarding AILET counselling schedule and interested candidates should pay admission cum counselling fee in order to appear for counselling.
Schedule will be different for different programs but counselling process will remain the same i.e. you just have to show your documents by visiting the respective venue i.e. NLU Delhi on the allotted date and time.
