BS-MS Admissions at IISER; Apply via Any of the Three Channels

The BS-MS course is a flagship course offered by all the IISERs, for candidates who have completed their Class 12.It is a 5-year integrated course offered by the IISERs, which combines Bachelors and Masters level study in respective principles. The program focuses on high quality learning by combining classroom learning with research oriented learning. The BS-MS course provides a lot of opportunities for inter-disciplinary learning as well.

There are three channels through which candidates can apply for the course. The three channels include KVPY, JEE and SCB. Fulfillment of any one of these 3 is sufficient to be eligible to apply for the course.

The first two years of the program are not focused on any specific discipline. Rather, all the students have to study some common subjects which include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and other basic science subjects. From this year onwards, students have to choose their area of specialization. The final year or the fifth year includes a full-fledged research project.

After completion of this course, students can opt for a career in academia, research and development and can engage with science based industries. The students can also opt for doctoral programs later on.

The KVPY Channel

The candidates who have cleared the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, or KVPY test are eligible to apply for the course. KVPY Fellowship of candidates must be starting from the academic session 2018-19. Some additional cutoff criteria will be also be applicable while selecting candidates.

The JEE Channel

Candidates can also apply on the basis of their scores in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The candidate must have qualified for JEE Advanced, which is the second leg of the test. Further, the candidate must have secured a rank amongst the top 10,000 students appearing for the test.

The candidates belonging to reserved categories; Schedule Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Castes, need to obtain a rank amongst top 10,000 students in their respective category.

The SCB Channel

SCB Channel stands for State and Central Boards’ Channel. Candidates can apply through this on the basis of the scores they have obtained in Class 12 examinations. However, candidates will need to appear for a test called IISER Aptitude Test, which is conducted by the IISERs.

Candidates need to have obtained a minimum cutoff score in Class 12 examinations, to be eligible for applying through this channel. Such cutoff scores will be communicated in the upcoming days, probably near to the date of opening of application forms.

The advantage in applying through this channel is that a minimum of 50% of the seats are filled through this channel. The official rules state that a maximum of 50% of the seats are to be filled through other two channels. If enough number of students do not get admission through other two routes, then the vacant seats will also be filled through SCB route.

How to Apply?

The application process for this program is completely online. The forms will be released in the month of May, 2018. Candidates are advised to keep a check on www.iiseradmission.in for further updates.

The application fee to apply for the program is INR 2000. For candidates belonging to SC, ST, Kashmiri Migrants and PH categories, the fees is INR 1000 and can only be paid through Secured Payment Gateway enabled on the website.

Candidates can apply through more than one channel as well. However, for each channel, candidates will need to fill up a separate form. The total number of seats available in all the IISERs for this course is around 1300. The caste/category based reservations are applicable on these seats as per the guidelines issued by the Government of India.
