Jaitley, Nobel laureate attend 49th ISI convocation

Kolkata, Jan 9 (IBNS): The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) held their 49'th convocation here on their ISI campus in Kolkata on Friday inviting among others 2007 Economics Nobel laureate professor Eric Stark Maskin as the chief guest.

Union Finance Minister Arun Shourie also joined the convocation function. Arun Shourie is the chairman of ISI Council.

Arun Shourie advised the students of ISI to pursue knowledge and excellence and not just follow money.

Professor of Economics at  Harvard University and the chief guest of this convocation, Eric Stark Maskin told the students that the graduates of ISI were going to be the leaders of the next generation. "What the government does will be in your hands," he added.

According to Eric S Maskin, the American economist and 2007 Nobel laureate "for having laid the foundations of mechanism design theory", the per capita of Indian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been tripled by globalization in less than 15 years which is an amazing accomplishment.

Eric said the government could provide public education to develop general and specific skills of people for a better future.

ISI handed over certificates to the successful graduates of different departments.
