Doctor shot dead at Delhi hospital amid protests over RG Kar rape-murder

New Delhi/IBNS: A 55-year-old doctor at a private nursing home in Delhi's Jaitpur was shot dead last night, a little less than two months after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Two teenagers had reached the Nima Hospital late at night, one of them got the dressing for his injured toe and then went to the cabin of Dr. Javed Akhtar for a prescription, the nursing home staff said.

Minutes after entering Dr. Akhtar's cabin, the staff heard a gunshot. After rushing to the cabin, the staff, as they claim, found the doctor bleeding from his head.

The staff said the two teenagers had visited the hospital the night before.

Police said the incident might be a targeted killing and the accused might have visited the hospital the night before for a recce.

The incident has triggered fresh talks over the need for doctors' security at hospital in the backdrop of the RG Kar rape-murder case that has triggered massive outrage across the nation.

Public anger is still on the rise in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts over the incident that led the junior doctors to a complete ceasework.

Though Kolkata Police was quick to arrest civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy in connection with the incident, West Bengal junior doctors suspect there are more than one behind the incident.

The case is currently being probed by the CBI under the monitoring of the Supreme Court.

The CBI has arrested ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who was already in custody for alleged financial irregularities in the hospital, and a cop in connection with the case.

Prior to CBI's investigation, the state administration came under the scanner over its alleged cover-up, delay in filing FIRs, demolition work near the crime scene, posting of Ghosh to the same post at another college after his resignation from RG Kar.

The Supreme Court has formed a National Task Force to formulate the steps to ensure the safety of doctors at their workplace.

Slamming the Centre which controls law and order in the union territory, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj posted on X, "Delhi has become crime capital - Gangsters operating with ease, extortion calls and firings and daily murders. Central Govt & @LtGovDelhi have failed in their basis work for Delhi."
