New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti and said his life continues to motivate millions.

The Prime Minister said, 'Bowing to one of the greatest sons of Mother India, the embodiment of courage, compassion and good governance, the exceptional Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. His life continues to motivate millions'.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made a mark as a valorous warrior and an outstanding administrator, he said in his missive.

'From building a strong navy to ushering several pro-people policies, he was outstanding in all spheres. He will always be remembered for his opposition to injustice and intimidation,' Modi wrote.

Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the chhatrapati (emperor) of his realm at Raigad.

The Maharashtra government lists February 19 as a holiday commemorating Shivaji Jayanti.
