Kolkata/IBNS: A special committee, formed by West Bengal government to tackle Covid-19 outbreak, on Thursday evening confirmed that total number of novel coronavirus cases in the state mounted to 53 as 16 new positive cases, including four deaths, have been reported in the last 24 hours.

"In last 24 hours, we had sent 104 swab samples for lab tests and 16 of those samples tested positive for novel coronavirus, taking the Covid-19 tally in West Bengal to 53," a member of the special committee stated.

"Three persons so far have recovered from novel coronavirus infections in the state while Covid-19 death toll has reached seven as four persons, who had tested positive for Covid-19, expired in last 24 hours," he added.

"Presently, 298 people are kept under hospital isolation as 137 persons were sent to hospital quarantine in last 24 hours," the committee member stated.

Currently, West Bengal is treating 43 active Covid-19 cases in different state and privately-run hospitals.

Meanwhile, keeping the confusion over Covid-19 death toll in West Bengal alive, state Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha on Thursday evening claimed that there were only three deaths directly related to novel coronavirus in Bengal as four other victims had been admitted to hospitals with other diseases and later tested positive for Covid-19.

"Three deaths in our state were directly related to novel coronavirus infections and deaths of four more persons, who had taken admission with various diseases and later tested Covid-19 positive just before death or post-death, are subject to confirmation," Sinha said.
