Covid-19: Calcutta HC bans use, sale of firecrackers during Kali Puja, Diwali, Chhath Puja in Bengal

Kolkata/IBNS: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday imposed a complete ban on the use and sale of all types of firecrackers across West Bengal during forthcoming Kali Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

After observing that air pollution from firecrackers may be hazardous for active and recovered Covid patients, the bench of Calcutta HC's Justice Sanjib Banerjee has directed the state police as well as Kolkata Police to take all necessary actions to implement the firecracker-ban order this year.

Days ago, WB Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay had requested the general people not to buy or use firecrackers amid pandemic while several other states have already banned firecrackers on Diwali.

Meanwhile, the high court also said that all restrictions, which it had imposed during Durga Puja, will be in effect on Kali Puja as well while all puja pandals will be kept in "no entry" zones for visitors.
