Geelani’s sons refused to visit graveyard under Pakistan's pressure: Police

Srinagar/UNI: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s both sons refused to come to graveyard for his burial indicating their loyalty to the Pakistan agenda, rather than love and respect for their father.

Earlier, police released a series of videos from “Ghusul” (abolution) till the separatist leader was laid to rest at Hyderpora graveyard.

A police spokesman said immediately after the death of Geelani, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range K Vijay Kumar, along with Superintendent of Police (SP) and Assistant SP, met both sons of Geelani at their Hyderpora residence at 2300 hrs on September 1.

The police officers conveyed their condolences and requested for burial in the night for the larger interest of the general public due to the potential major law and order situation.

Both the sons of Geelani agreed and sought two hours' time till their relatives reach, the spokesman said.

He said that IGP Kashmir personally spoke to a few relatives and ensured their safe passage to Geelani’s house.

However, three hours later, probably under pressure from Pakistan and miscreants,Geelani sons behaved differently and started resorting to anti-national activities including wrapping dead bodies in Pakistani flag, making loud pro-Pakistan slogans in favour of Pakistan and instigating neighbours to come out.

However, after persuasion the relatives brought the body to the graveyard and performed last rites with due respect in presence of members of Intezamia Committee and local Imam.

The refusal of both his sons to come to the graveyard indicated their loyalty to the Pakistani agenda rather than their love and respect for their father, he said.

The family members of Geelani had alleged that they were not allowed to perform Ghusul and other formalities for the burial of Geelani. They further alleged that police snatched the body of Geelani and buried him without the participation of family members.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) and several others strongly reacted to alleged police action.
