Chandigarh/IBNS: Actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood's sister Malvika Sood on Monday joined the Congress a month ahead of the Punjab assembly elections, which will be a litmus test for the grand old party's relevance in Indian politics.

Malvika Sood joined the Congress, which is defending one of its last turfs, in presence of Punjab Congress Committee chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Malvika Sood's joining was also marked by the presence of Sonu Sood, who was appointed by Congress' new rival Arvind Kejriwal as the brand ambassador of a Delhi government programme.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is expected to give a close fight to the Congress in the upcoming elections, which are scheduled to be held on Feb 14.

Elated for the new inclusion, Sidhu tweeted, "There is no permanent name and fame than the endeavour to give happiness to mankind !! Chairs don’t grace people but people grace those chairs … Proud to be associated with one of the greatest Philanthropist of our times, The Party feels proud to have them onboard @SonuSood."

Plunging into politics, Malvika Sood said she has taken the step to serve people.

Apart from his acting in big films, Sonu Sood caught the limelight in 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic through his philanthropic works of arranging buses for migrant workers stuck on roads due to a lockdown besides helping all people in need.

Days ago, Sonu Sood stepped down as Punjab's state icon coming in sync with the poll body principles, highlighting that her sister was contesting the elections.
