Bikaner-Guwahati Express derails in West Bengal, several feared dead

Kolkata/IBNS: Several were feared dead as multiple coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed near Maynaguri in West Bengal on Thursday. 

Several visuals show passengers are being rescued from the debris of multiple coaches which are derailed. 

Moumita Godara Basu, DM, Jalpaiguri has confirmed that three bodies were recovered from the scene. Rescue ops are underway.

Locals and co-passengers are helping in the rescue operation. 

Police have reached the spot. 

Reacting to the incident, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said he is personally monitoring the situation for swift rescue operations.

"In an unfortunate accident, 12 Coaches of Bikaner - Guwahati Exp. derailed near New Maynaguri (West Bengal) this evening. Personally monitoring the situation for swift rescue operations," he wrote in his tweet.

Meanwhile West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed that senior officers of the state government are supervising the rescue and relief operations.

"Deeply concerned to hear about the tragic accident of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express in Maynaguri. Senior Officers of the State Government, DM/SP/IG North Bengal are supervising rescue and relief operations. Those injured will receive medical attention, as early as possible," her tweet read.

She also mentioned that the "situation being closely monitored from the State HQs."
