Kolkata/IBNS: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, who had joined the saffron camp ahead of 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, on Saturday urged people in Asansol to vote in favour of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Agnimitra Paul in the upcoming byelections to the seat.

Chakraborty, who is still in the BJP, said in a video message, "I request all voters to vote in favour of the BJP in Asansol. I can guarantee that Agnimitra will work for you."

"People have seen others. Let's give her a chance. She will work for people," he added.

Chakraborty, a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, was vocal against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the last assembly elections.

Even in the latest video, Chakraborty, without taking any name, took a dig at Banerjee saying, "I have seen a lot of brother-sister relationships in life.

"People forget with time. But Agnimitra never forgot me and my family. She maintained the relationship."

Chakraborty had referred to his relationship with Banerjee as "brother-sister" one while he had joined the TMC years ago.

Rumours were also rife that Chakraborty could have become the Chief Minister if the BJP had won the state polls last year.
