Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti asked to vacate Fairview residence

Srinagar/UNI: The Jammu and Kashmir government has asked former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti to vacate her official bungalow in a posh area in Srinagar.

Officials said on Friday that the Estates Department served a notice to Mehbooba Mufti on October 15, asking her to vacate the Fairview residence.

The government has offered an alternate accommodation to her.

Mehbooba Mufti is a vocal critic of the BJP government and its policies ever since Jammu and Kashmir's special status was abrogated.

The two-storey heritage house -- Fairview bungalow -- overlooking the Dal Lake perched on the foothills of Zabarwan Mountain on Gupkar Road has been the address of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba for over a decade.

Till 1989, it served as an official guest house. The Fairview bungalow was the biggest interrogation center of the security forces and the place invoked dread in the early days of militancy.

In 1996, former Chief Secretary Ashok Jaitley used it as his residence. In 2003, then Finance Minister Muzaffar Baig used it as an official residence.

The bungalow was allotted to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in December 2005 after he relinquished the Chief Minister’s office.
