PM Modi calls Team India, thanks Rahul Dravid, hails Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday spoke to the Indian Cricket Team over the phone to congratulate the players for their T20 World Cup win against South Africa.

The Prime Minister thanked coach Rahul Dravid, whose two-and-a-half-year-long tenure as Team India's Head Coach came to a close after the winning match, for his contribution to Indian cricket.

Under Rahul Dravid's guidance, India's 11-year ICC title drought ended with their triumph in yesterday's match.

PM Modi congratulated Rohit Sharma for his "splendid captaincy" and praised Virat Kohli for his performance in the final match.

Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their T20I retirements yesterday. While Kohli announced his retirement minutes after the triumph, India captain Rohit Sharma announced it in the official post match press conference.

Millions of Indians across the globe and the blue brigade present in the Kensington Oval in Barbados burst into cheers when Rohit Sharma and his spirited men choked first-time finalists South Africa and beat them by seven runs to lift the T20 World Cup for the second time in the history of the marquee tournament on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav picked up a sensational catch on the boundary in the first ball of the last over bowled by Hardik Pandya to dismiss David Miller (21) which ensured India won the elite tournament and changed the fate of the side which was losing back-to-back ICC finals.

The last defeat was in Ahmedabad where Australia beat India in the final of the 50 over World Cup in 2023.
