Kolkata, Mar 10(IBNS) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the West Bengal government to pay Rs. 50,000 as compensation to Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, who was arrested in 2012 for forwarding a cartoon of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on a social networking site.

The court said Mahapatra  be given additional compensation besides the Rs.50,000 ordered by the West Bengal Human Rights Commission.

The court has also ordered compensation for Professor Mahapatra's neighbour Subroto Roy, who was also arrested.

In April 2012, Professor Mahapatra was by police and produced in court under certain charges for forwarding the cartoons. He was later released on bail after he was allegedly forced to give a written statement that he was a member of the CPI(M).

Mahapatra was also allegedly assaulted by a group of people.

Taking cognizance of the incident, the state human rights commission said those critical of the ruling party cannot just be picked up by  police. The panel also ordered the government to give him compensation.
