New Delhi/IBNS: In his first response to the hanging of four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said "justice has prevailed".

Modi tweeted, "Justice has prevailed. It is of utmost importance to ensure dignity and safety of women. Our Nari Shakti has excelled in every field. Together, we have to build a nation where the focus is on women empowerment, where there is emphasis on equality and opportunity."

Seven years after Nirbhaya was brutally gangraped and murdered in the national capital, leaving the country shocked and triggering a series of protests demanding justice for her, all the four convicts in the 2012 case were executed at Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Friday.

Ending a long legal battle, which was extended till late Friday morning, just hours before four were hanged, the execution took place at 5:30 am.

All the four people convicts were identified as Akshay Thakur (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Mukesh Singh (32).

According to media reports, all the four men have been declared dead after doctor examined them.

The hanging was confirmed by Sandeep Goel, Director-General of Tihar jail, reported UNI.

The hanging took place after the Supreme Court rejected the last petition filed by one of the four convicts to stop the execution.

Seeking the late-night hearing, AP Singh, the lawyer of the convicts, had approached the apex court.

The judges of the Supreme Court held a special sitting to hear the petition.

At 0230 hrs, the Supreme Court rejected the last-ditch attempt by their lawyer A P Singh to delay the execution.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who came to be known as Nirbhaya, was gang raped and savagely assaulted in a moving bus in South Delhi area on Dec 16, 2012 and died fortnight later.
