Kolkata, Mar 30 (IBNS): Hours after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata's Ho Chi Min Sarani area that claimed at least two lives, police on Thursday evening arrested an official and a senior staffer of the hotel for violating fire safety guidelines and negligence in rescuing people when the incident took place, police officials said.

According to reports, the managing director of Golden Parkk Hotel, B.S. Gujral, and senior manager of the hotel, Gautam Majumder, were detained in the afternoon and after a marathon interrogation at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station, they were arrested in the evening.

"On the basis of a complaint, lodge by state Fire and Emergency Services department, we have started investigation into the case and arrested Golden Parkk Hotel's owner Bhupinder Singh Gujral and its management staff Gautam Majumder," a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.

"They have been charged under several IPC sections, including 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and sections 11J and 11L of West Bengal Fire Services (WBFS) Act," the official added.

Earlier on the wee hours of Thursday, at least two persons were killed and six others were injured as a major fire broke out at Golden Parkk Hotel at Ho Chi Min Sarani area under Shakespeare Sarani Police Station limits in south part of the city, very close to the British High Commission and the US Consul General's office.

Following the incident, Director General of West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services- Jag Mohan, Director General of state police- Surajit Kar Purakayastha and state fire minister and Kolkata Mayor Shovan Chatterjee visited the scene.

They all alleged that the hotel did not have appropriate fire extinguishing system and neither fire alarms and smoke detectors nor fire sprinklers worked when the basement+G+4 hotel were covered by fire and heavy smoke.

Later a forensic experts team went to the hotel and collected sample from the spot.

However, the arrested duo will be produced before a local court in Kolkata on Friday, according to reports.
