Mamata Banerjee pays homage to all those killed in political violence
Kolkata, Jul 27 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the occasion of "Nanoor Dibas" today paid her homage to all those who lost their lives due to political violence.
Taking to her Twitter handle, Banerjee said, " Today is Nanoor Dibas. Innocent agricultural labourers were brutally martyred on this day in 2000. My homage to all those who lost their lives due to political violence. "
Like every year, this year too the Trinamool is paying its homage to the martyrs of Nanoor.
On July 27, 2000, political violence broke out in Soochpur village of Nanoor block in the district of Birbhum over the right to cultivate a four-bigha plot.
Eleven farm workers lost their lives. This incident is considered one of the foremost political disturbances of recent times in Bengal.
Following this incident, the Trinamool chairperson decided to build a martyrs’ memorial in memory of those killed at Baspada Bus Stand in Nanoor block, and celebrate Shahid Dibas there every year.
In 2010, Mamata Banerjee, who was the then Railway Minister, took up the cause of bringing justice for the brutal killings.
Ultimately 44 accused were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
This was a historic judgement as it was the first time that so many people were convicted in Bengal for mass murder.
