New Delhi, Feb 14 (IBNS): The Congress party on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi government over the terrorist attack in south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Srinagar-Jammu national highway which left at least 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel martyred, and said the national security has been compromised.

Congress leader and party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said: "The Modi government has failed to prevent such dastardly attacks. There has been a compromise on national security by the Modi-led BJP government."

Surjewala said the "Modi government could not show his 56-inch chest to the Pakistanis."

Besides the 40 martyred jawans, 14 others have been injured in the fidayeen attack by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant outfit at Awantipora on Thursday afternoon.

Official sources told UNI that militants rammed an IED-laden vehicle into a vehicle carrying CRPF at Goripora, Awantipora on Thursday afternoon.

They said 12 CRPF personnel were killed on the spot and 32 others wounded after the vehicle was blown up. “The injured were immediately taken to Army’s 92 base hospital,” they said, adding 18 more jawans succumbed at the hospital.

Officials informed that the death toll could increase as the condition of some other jawans in critical.

“Security forces have been rushed to the spot and the area has been cordoned off,” they added.

The ‘Fidayeen' has been identified as Adil Ahmad, a resident of Kakapora in Pulwama.

Meanwhile, Advisor to Governor, K Vijay Kumar said JeM has claimed the responsibility of the attack and also release the photograph of the militant. “Forensic experts have been rushed to the spot and other details will be released after investigation,” he told reporters.

He said militants are frustrated by the causalities they have incurred in the last about one year. "That is the reason they carried out such attack," he said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi earlier tweeted, "I’m deeply disturbed by the cowardly attack on a #CRPF convoy in J&K in which many of our brave CRPF men have been martyred and a large number wounded, some critically. My condolences to the families of our martyrs. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured."
